To precisely define Identity Theft, one can refer to various sources but, what it all boils down to is that it occurs when a criminal steals another person’s name and other personal information to illegally use such fraudulently attained means of identification information for nefarious activities. It is an act of impersonation that uses another person’s personal information like a date of birth, Social Security number, address, and name as well as bank account information for illegal means. It is also co-option of another person’s personal information without the other person’s knowledge and consent and, using such information to fraudulently deceive others. It is a deliberate assumption of another person’s identity which is most often used to gain access to their finances or, implicate them in a crime. It is also used for illegal immigration, terrorism and espionage as well as for changing identity personally. These are a few of of the most used ways in which most people define ID theft.

Identity Theft First Defined in 1996

To define identity theft, one may look back to the year 1996 when it first came to the attention of the world and, was incorporated into American literary terminology. The Federal Trade Commission was greatly concerned by the criminal abuse of consumers’ means of identification through theft or other fraudulent means. To define identity theft, one has to realize that it is physically impossible to steal another person’s identity; however, stealing their means of identification is possible and, is now a part of a growing trend in white-collar crime in the US.

Some people prefer the definition of identity theft as meaning unlawful exploitation of their means of identification for unlawful purposes. Another school of thought, with regard to defining identity theft, thinks that the thief actually deprives the owner of his or her identity when the thief replaces the victim’s identity with their own dubious reputation. A common thread one can see in defining Identity Theft is that it involves illegally acquiring the personal information of a victim in order to perpetrate impersonation of the victim’s identity.

One needs to define identity theft in all its various forms as the calculating minds of criminals can envisage of and put into action many clever schemes to dupe authorities as well as incriminate victims. Blackmail is also another type of identity theft that could be used against unsuspecting victims. Now that a clear and concise definition of identity theft has been determined, a big step against this criminal act will have been won.

A lot of individuals on the internet do not realize they have spyware on their computer. Many think, viruses are more to agonize about. Everyone has heard about viruses because they are so wide spread and spoke of so often in the news. These days, anti spyware programs are phenomenal and can prevent infections from ever getting installed onto your computer.

One of the best ways to prevent malicious software from being installed on your computer is to have the best spyware removal software. You should learn how to be familiar with malicious content and the proper form of prevention. Don’t be afraid of spyware, adware, and malware. It can be removed!!!

It’s usually easier to recognize a spyware infection from a virus infection. Many times viruses go unnoticed. Spyware is easily detected by anti spyware programs and by the effects the spyware will have on your computer. Not always, but a lot of the time spyware will team up with adware. These adware programs will show you unwanted ads and attempt to get you to click on these ads. Once clicked, it will redirect you to a malicious website in hope of infecting your computer more or stealing your information.

Here are some common questions regarding whether or not you have spyware software on your computer:

Q: There is an increased number of in pop-up advertisements such as text ads, picture ads, and sometimes adult advertisements. Do I have spyware on my computer and can I remove it?

A: Yes – More often than not the signs mentioned in this question relate to spyware tied in with adware. Spyware and it’s cousin, adware, can be quickly and safely removed with Spyware Doctor or with ADS Adware Remover, two of today’s leading spyware blockers. Spyware Doctor or ADS Adware Remover can also defend against spyware from getting installed on your computer in the future.

Q: My browsers home page defaults have been changed, why?

A: Sometimes spyware will change your browser settings. The reason it does this so that the main “home” page is now the malicious software’s website. This “malicious” site can then cause more undesirable programs to be downloaded onto your computer. It can allow for attacks against your computer without you even knowing these attacks are taking place. It’s very likely that you have spyware on your computer.

Did you know you can get a free scan using PCTools Spyware Doctor?
Q: I’ve noticed just a while ago when I try to go to one of my favorite websites I have problems. I get redirected to a website I’m not familiar with. I thought the site I’ve been going to had moved but I’m not sure that’s the case.

A: This is a sure sign you’ve been affected by spyware and it’s one of the most dated tricks in the book. Site redirection by spyware has been around for years, it was one of the first methods employed by spyware programs to steal and spy on your activities. Don’t enter any information into this website you’ve been redirected to. The information you enter could be stolen and used against you.

Q: Ok, I know I have spyware now what do I do? Can I get rid of it?

A: Yes! Most people do not realize that spyware is different than a virus. Spyware has different signatures and are made up a little different than a virus. What this means is that a virus is written to spread to other computers or open a backdoor into yours. These are characteristics that anti-virus programs look for. Just like a virus, spyware will have signatures too.

Leading spyware blocker manufactures, such as PCTools, keep on top of these signatures and update their anti spy ware programs accordingly.

What does this mean for you?

It means you get the same industry level protection from a spyware blocker manufacture, as you get from industry leading anti-virus manufactures. Spyware blockers, such as Spyware Doctor, can not only get rid of spyware spyware that is already on your computer but block new spyware from ever being installed.

When you hear the term “internet marketing“, what do you think of?

For many, that term conjures thoughts of websites or spamming or search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing. For others, it’s all about graphical design, writing fancy code or even affiliate programs. All of those answers correct, but the essence of internet marketing is much simpler.

At its core, internet marketing is about these things:

* Understanding the target market to which the product/service/cause you’re marketing will appeal
* Determining exactly how your target market interacts with the internet
* Positioning your content on the internet to attract the attention of your target market
* Collecting information about your target market (also known as “leads”) for follow-up and conversion into sales
* Design of offers or incentives to induce the desired actions from your leads

Since there is insufficient space in this article to give all of these topics adequate attention, let’s focus on just one specific topic with the realm of internet marketing: Email Marketing.

My best payoff has always come by focusing on permission-based email marketing. Permission-based email marketing refers to the practice of collecting information (including email addresses) from website visitors and communicating with them via e-mail with their direct consent. The “permission” aspect of permission-based email marketing is what separates legitimate email marketers from the spammers that everyone despises.

My love of email marketing is strong for one reason: It works very well. Email marketing has been much like a never-ending goldmine: It enables us to produce income on demand simply by sending a good offer to our list. When you have thousands of loyal subscribers - as we do - and you put a strong and compatible offer in front of them, income becomes nearly automatic.

However, the key to successful email marketing is the development of a legitimate trust relationship with your subscribers. If you opt to send your subscribers a request for purchases every single day, they will likely tire of your badgering and cease reading your emails altogether.

Alternatively, if you take the time to provide good content to your readers on a regular and frequent basis, you’ll discover that your readers take all of your emails far more seriously, and as a result your emails will be opened, read and acted upon with greater frequency. Essentially, email marketing is really an exercise in trust.

Even though there are more sides to internet marketing than just email marketing (permission based), email has been the foundation that our business sits on.

Even if you have anti-virus, spyware protection, and a firewall, you could still be an easy target for identity thieves, hackers and cyber criminals. Read on to find out how YOU are giving online criminals simple access to your personal and financial information.

You think you have done all the correct things. You’ve installed a good firewall, you keep your antivirus up to date, and you’re making sure you keep up with the latest security patches… so your computer network should be {protected|safe} from identity thieves, right?

Wrong!

According to a recent study, 37% of electronic identity theft incidents had one element in common: they were caused by an action taken by the user. That’s correct, more than 1/3 of identity thefts were not thefts, but information that was readily provided!

So how do you avoid this happening to you and your company?

No one is 100% safe, but the following three tips will stop you from accidentally handing online criminals access to your computer network and confidential information:

1. Never visit or download free music files, videos or programs from file-sharing sites such as Kazaa. Not only are you downloading stolen materials, but these sites are surefire ways to introduce worms and viruses to your computer. If you are a business owner, set up web filtering software to prevent employees from downloading any unauthorized programs or files.

2. Never respond to any e-mail from a bank, credit card company, PayPal or online store where items are purchased (such as eBay) asking you to verify your account information, no matter how credible or legitimate it looks. These are phishing tactics created to obtain your account information.

3. Be sure to ask for ID from anyone requesting physical access to your equipment, and instruct your employees to do so as well. Just to test a theory, I asked a friend to walk into an office, say they are from “the phone company” responding to a problem, and ask to see the network. Access was granted to a complete stranger 100% of the time.

Dealing with and educating your users is typically a responsibility of IT Management department or company. Contact a IT managed services or corporate computer services firm if you have security concerns for your business.

1. Can I pass information only to someone without it leaking to anybody else? Yes you can. You can use data encryption with the key known only by the receiver. Suppose a third party tapping the communication gets hold of the data, he will still could not make any sense out of it since it's meaningless unless it is decrypted.

2. What is a hash? Is it the password? A hash value is a string of characters that represent encrypted data. In short, it is the protected data.

3. What is SSL, what does it stand for? SSL stands for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL falls in the category of public key encryption.

4. How does a firewall work? A firewall monitors and filters out unwanted data packets from an Internet connection.

5. What does a proxy server do? Proxy servers stands between computers accessing the internet and the web servers. They relay requests from users to web servers and vice versa, without the servers realizing who is behind them. This creates a privacy for the users in that web servers have no idea that the real user interacting with them are behind the proxy server.

6. Botnet? What is it? It is an group of what we call zombie computers. A bot or zombie computer is a computer that has transformed into bots or automatic machines that are controlled by a third party somewhere.

7. DDos, what does it mean, how does it work? DDoS is Distributed Denial of Service. It is an attack that uses computers over the internet to send millions of requests to a server with the goal of overwhelming and crashing the server. In a major incident of DDoS attack, the whole internet traffic is disturbed.

8. A computer virus, what is it? Usually, a computer virus is a malicious code that resides within a larger computer legitimate code. Although some viruses don’t harm computer, there have been ones that are notorious to have caused catastrophes.

9. Phishing attack, what is it? Phishing is a method intended to fool ignorant people into giving away classified information like bank account numbers, usernames and passwords and credit card information, by faking a legitimate web site.

10. What does Cracker mean? What’s a Black Hat? We call hackers infiltrating secured systems to cause rogue things acquire certain informations as crackers.

To gain knowledge on how to prevent information theft in upholding computer security, it is best that we know more about cookies. This knowledge may be tiny and less exciting but we can gain a major understanding on how they operate and use it for our defense against security threats.

1. Cookies place in local drives details about your computer and settings. Let’s suppose you’ve been to a site before, in other wordsyou are a return user, and this is done with cookies. Other than that, it can also save specifics such as area codes used for periodic local weather reports from a site.

2. Internet cookies are created by a web site server to be stored in a computer storage at the time the user first enters a site. Later in the interaction between the user and the webpage, more cookies may be placed or altered.

3. Cookies are stored in pairs of name and value like “ZipCode,” and the value is “60119″ for zip code a user last entered in a web page query.

4. Web site’s cookies will not collect personal information about a user from a computer. The user may be asked to provide data in a query regarding his / her personal data, but a cookie can’t obtain the data by itself although the file was in the computer drive.

5. Although a cookie may save many other data, it is not capable of getting informations stored in other cookies.

6. You are allowed to delete your cookies on the computer by going into your Temporary Internet Files folder.

7. Internet cookies are also used for marketing. “Targeting” is intensely targeted marketing to internet users based on information (like past purchases) saved in their cookies.

8. There are cookies that can track users across the Internet, not just on one site. This technology was introduced by DoubleClick company.

9. In 2003, White House Office of Management and Budget illegalized the use of persistent cookies, which are cookies that stay active, even after a user has exited out of his or her Web browser. This kind of cookies are easily abused to bring in spyware and worms.

10. The small, 1×1 pixel cookies called web bugs implanted in banner ads are small 1×1 pixel cookies hidden in banner ads that store cookies in a computer when a user clicks a banner ad.

We have read complaints on other blogs about the PCI standards, claiming they are a burden for merchants and software developers. But when considering the documented link between credit card fraud—which PCI DSS was developed to fight against—and terrorism, perhaps complaints about security standards will fall silent.

Kimberly Kiefer Peretti, Senior Counsel in the Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Secti on of the USA Department of Justice, recently wrote an excellent white paper, “Data Breaches: What the Underground World of ‘Carding’ Reveals.” In this paper, she gives a concise overview of large scale data breaches by skilled hackers—who is doing it and how, as well as the implications of these breaches.

One of Peretti’s most salient points comes in her discussion of how carding—activities surrounding the theft and fraudulent use of credit and debit card account numbers—is linked to other criminal behavior, including terrorism and drug trafficking. She writes:

“Indeed, it appears that terrorists may be well aware of the carding underground. A convicted terrorist in Indonesia, Imam Samudra, specifically referred to credit card fraud and carding as a means to fund terrorist activities in his 280-page autobiography. Samudra allegedly sought to fund the 2002 Bali nightclub bombings, of which he was convicted, in part through online credit card fraud.

In a second case connecting terrorism and credit card fraud, three British men were convicted of inciting terrorist murder via the Internet under the United Kingdom’s Terrorism Act of 2000.In this case, Younes Tsouli, Waseem Mughal, and Tariq Al- Daour allegedly ran a network of extremist websites and through al-Qaeda statements communication forums and videos of beheadings and suicide bombings in Iraq and other jihadi propaganda were disseminated. The second phase of the case, the three men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud banks and credit card companies. With regard to these charges, Al-Daour and his confederates allegedly used stolen credit card numbers obtained through phishing scams and Trojan horses to make more than $3,5 million iHackern fraudulent charges.Specially, Al-Daour and his co-conspirators used the numbers at lots of online stores to purchase equipment and other items, including prepaid cell phones and airline tickets, to aid jihadi groups in the field.Apart from this, Tsouli and Mughal allegedly used stolen credit card numbers to set up and host jihadi websites. Significantly, the investigation revealed that these individuals were members of one or more carding organizations, including the now defunct Shadowcrew criminal organization.”

The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards, PCI DSS, were created by the major credit card companies to prevent these types of data breaches to merchants and payment processors. Although they are not a fool-proof plan against hackers, if a business follows PCI DSS carefully and implements it as part of a holistic security risk management plan, their customer information is less likely to be compromised. And, in turn, a business is taking part in the squelching of the funding of terrorist organizations. How empowering!

The Best Free Spyware Remover: It is in the net!

Once you start suspecting that there is a spyware in your computer system, you must act at once. The best thing to do is to get a spyware remover software.
